As Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach Josh Pastner rolls through scouting reports on each scholarship player on this team, one thing continues to pop up: points.

The team has to be smart in its shot selection because there isn’t a go-to scorer.

The second thing is the players need to give total effort in everything from rebounding, to avoiding turnovers, to taking good shots.

The margin of error for earning wins will be very small.

Over the next few days, I’ll post player-by-player scouting reports on the team as it prepares for its exhibition opener against Shorter on Nov. 5 at McCamish Pavilion.

The Yellow Jackets went 21-15 overall, 8-10 in the ACC under previous coach Brian Gregory.

Kellen McCormick

Class: Graduate Student.

Position: Forward.

Height: 6-7.

High school: Notre Dame Prep/Western Michigan.

Career averages

Points: 4.4.

Shooting percentage: 45.1.

3-point percentage: 42.0.

Rebounds: 1.5.

Miscellaneous: Totals of 33 assists and 43 turnovers in 95 games played in previous three seasons. … A 72.7 percent free-throw shooter. … Career bests in field goal percentage (47.8), 3-point percentage (45.8), scoring (6.0) and rebounds (1.9) last season. … Scored 31 points against Manchester College.

Coach Josh Pastner’s take: High IQ for the game. He’s got to make shots too. He can do some things because of his high IQ. But he’s got to put the ball in the basket. He’s got to keep the defense honest and be able to make open 3’s. He and Jodan (Price) have to shoot more than 40 percent from 3.
