Former Georgia Tech defensive back Rashaad Reid’s brother came up with a barbecue sauce so good that family and friends encouraged him to sell it.
And so Bo and Rashaad Reid are doing that, one $5 bottle at a time. Reid, who played for the Yellow Jackets 2008-2011, has been spending his evenings making the sauce at his Sandy Springs apartment, bottling and labeling Reids Sweet and Tangy BBQ Sauce.
“You can definitely taste the homemade flavoring,” he said.
Reid recently tried it out on several former teammates, including other members of his 2008 signing class, Omoregie Uzzi, Richard Watson, Daniel McKayhan and Jon Lockhart. Uzzi has bought a couple bottles and tried, unsuccessfully, to get the recipe out of Reid.
“It’s like nothing I’ve ever tasted before,” Uzzi said. “Perfect mix – tangy, sweet, not too spicy at all.”
Bo Reid has been making it since about 2005.
“We do a lot of cooking in our family,” he said. “We do a lot of experiments. It’s really an experiment that turned out really, really good.”
Reid played 53 games for the Jackets, which at that point tied the school record for most games played in a career. He is probably best remembered for recovering the fumble caused by safety Cooper Taylor in Tech’s 2008 upset of Florida State at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Reid has tried pitching it to retail stores but has been unsuccessful thus far. In the meantime, Reid has been pitching it to friends on his Facebook page. Reid’s full-time job is as a resource manager for ZeroChaos, a workforce supply company. (ZeroChaos is contracted with Cox Communications, which is a sister company of the AJC.)
Reid has even been making personal deliveries.
“You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to build a brand,” he said.
